39 countries for Oslo 2010

The list was confirmed by the EBU earlier today, and means that any countries that withdraw from here on in will face a fine.

Absentees from last year are Montenegro, Hungary, Andorra, and the Czech Republic. Georgia returns to the contest after being disqualified over their attempted 2009-entry “We don’t wanna put in”.

From the total of 39, the “Big-4″ (France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom) are directly qualified to the final, although with hosts Norway. That leaves 34 countries to contest two semifinals; seventeen in each, from which ten will qualify.

The Eurovision final will run with 25 entries despite fewer participants this year. The full list of participating countries & broadcasters is as follows:

You will remember at the beginning of July, we reported of rumours of the results of the Turkish back up jury, that showed up some interesting reading. As we all know, each country must have a back-up jury whose votes are used in the event of problems with televoting. However, this year the votes of each jury were used to determine one qualifier from each of the semifinals. Kosovo: RTK wants to enter Eurovision as soon as possible

Kosovarian broadcaster RTK has shown interest in entering the Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster will soon apply for active EBU membership and will hope to get it in time to enter the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. As a national selection, they will use a contest which stopped years ago, called Akordet e Kosoves . The question remains whether RTK will be able to get active EBU membership, since countries like Serbia, Russia and Greece can object, as they don't recognise the new Republic of Kosovo.
