Ireland 2008

Well it's over, and I don't think anyone is surprised, but Dustin the Turkey will represent Ireland in May.

The result was greeted by audible booing throughout the arena in Limerick. The winner was chosen by a public vote with the mixture of televoting and sms/texting.

Ireland is the most successful country in the Eurovision Song Contest with a record 7 wins, clocking up a 3 in a row victory in 1992, 1993 and 1994. However after hosting the competition in 1997, this has dramatically changed: the country was disappointingly relegated in 2002, didn't make the final in 2005 and finished last, last May in Helsinki 2007. In Serbia, Ireland will compete in the first semi-final on May 20th 2008, in the hope their luck might change!

Clearly angered by the result, Ireland's first winner, the country's first Eurovision Song Contest winner, Dana, said that "the people had voted but it was a fowl decision". Earlier in the evening she said that if Ireland sends Dustin the Turkey, the country should withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest altogether.

The 2007 winner, Marija Serifovic, also a guest panelist said that "it's different, but you'll have to be called Dustin the Duck in Europe".

Reactions have been mixed with some saying it will get a top 10, others saying nil points and others saying it will not get pass the semi-final.
