Malta: Will participate in Eurovision 2009

Not surprised, but Malta will continue to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, Culture Minister Dolores Cristina said last night.

There had been many calls for Malta to withdraw from the contest after its disappointing results in the last three years. If there is one country I always want desperately to win, its Malta.

Malta has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1971. In the first few years they did not do well and withdrew after the 1975 edition. Since they returned in 1991 however things went a lot better. Despite not having won so far, Malta has come fairly close on several occasions.

They came 2nd in 2002 and 2005, but since 2007 they have failed to come out of the Semi Final.

As we all know, each country must have a back-up jury whose votes are used in the event of problems with televoting. Kosovo: RTK wants to enter Eurovision as soon as possible

Kosovarian broadcaster RTK has shown interest in entering the Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster will soon apply for active EBU membership and will hope to get it in time to enter the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. As a national selection, they will use a contest which stopped years ago, called Akordet e Kosoves . The question remains whether RTK will be able to get active EBU membership, since countries like Serbia, Russia and Greece can object, as they don't recognise the new Republic of Kosovo.
